Searching the Scriptures

“Search the Scriptures” comes the command;

Search the Scriptures to understand

What is the will and way of the Lord,

Where to find joy which earth cannot afford.

In covenant homes in the days of their youth

Children learn to pray, “Lord, lead me in Thy truth.”

As young children we learned verses by heart:

“Train up a child…. He will not depart.”

As teens we questioned our parents and teachers

And often tested the patience of our elders and preachers,

But our conscience gave rise to God’s Word once again;

“YOU I have chosen from out among men.”

As young women we asked God, ‘Will I be a wife?

How shall I know God’s will for my life?’

Searching the Scriptures we came to see:

“How shall two walk together except they agree.”

When God does not give a mate or children, though this is our prayer;

We read, “Cast thy burden on the LORD.” And, by grace, we leave it there.

When God gives us children and we stand in awe before the gift and responsibility,

We rest in the promise, “I will be a God to thee and thy seed after thee.”

When teenagers try us with their foolish persistence

We cling to the scripture, “My grace is sufficient.”

When times of loneliness and the fog of despair settle in:

“From the depths I will bring thee forth once again.”

We hear the law read and know our misery:

“Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.”

In time of joy when our hearts burst forth with song,

“My God I will praise all the day long.”

When I envy a sister’s gifts, her lifestyle, her raiment;

Have I learned, “in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content”?

And when I’m “so busy,” I’ve no time to read God’s Word or to pray,

“O! How love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day”?

When in a puffed up spirit I am looking down upon all,

“Pride before destruction; a haughty spirit before a fall.”

When with thankful hearts we see confession of our youth,

“I have no greater joy than to see my children walk in truth.”

And in our later years, we can utter a thankful prayer:

“A goodly heritage is mine, marked out with gracious care.”

In all phases of life, no matter our lot, or our unique situation,

Searching the Scripture we find correction, peace, and consolation.

For in our searching we’re finding more of our God every day;

“Hear thou … be wise, guide thine heart in the way.”

By His Word our souls are strengthened and fed,

“Lord, ever more give us this bread.”

May God ever bless us with the Holy Spirit, giving us eyes

To see, “with healing in His wings the Sun of Righteousness arise”.

May the Lord grant the Holy Spirit to give us spiritual ears

That our response may be: “Speak, Lord, Thy servant hears.”
