Atheism

Religion has always been a part of history. As Christians, we see many false teachings and false religions. We can look at them and study them to find the errors in them and by faith we believe in the one true God. We confess in the Apostles’ Creed, “I believe in God the Father Almighty” and follow other verses of the Bible that say the same. Atheism may not be considered a religion sometimes, but I see it as one because it still has beliefs in which we can see major errors even though they might not be as conventional. Here we look at those errors and how to prove them wrong.

Atheism is a lack of belief in spiritual beings and of God, and it also rejects religious belief. This term came from the ancient Greek word atheos (ἄθεος) meaning “without gods”. The actual term atheism came in the 16th century. It was given to people who rejected the gods that were worshipped, those who were forsaken by the gods, and those who had no commitment to the gods. Today 7% of the world’s population are Atheist. Pew Research surveys given in both 2018 and 2019 revealed that 4% of Americans consider themselves atheists, but a higher percentage of atheists occupy European countries.

Atheists believe there is no meaning in the universe. They also say that beliefs of God or gods is just a story told to rationalize most events. Their belief of random events leaves everything meaningless. They attempt to find something that has any meaning, but with this belief there is nothing. One thing that would be meaningless in their point of view is suffering, God has a reason for suffering that we may not understand, but we know it is the result of sin on earth. We are guilty of sin and deserve to suffer for our sin. We see this suffering for sin’s sake many times in the Bible. Some examples include: the flood in Noah’s time, fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah, the captivity of the Israelites into Babylon, etc. God is the one that sends this suffering on mankind showing his control over every good or bad event through history.

There are four ways we can see the errors of atheism: in creation, our desire to know God, God shown in history, and in the Bible. God is revealed through creation. He reveals himself through all he has created. Psalm 19:1 states, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” We look around us everyday and see the astonishing creation, and we see God’s hand in all he made. We read in Romans 1:20, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” We obviously see the whole creation, and it reveals God’s power and plan throughout time. It leaves the world without excuse, as the verse says, if they do not believe in God who created all.

Everyone can clearly see this, but instead of giving God the glory atheists explain it using a scientific method or some type of implausible event. They explain the makeup of the world as molecules that have formed over the span of millions of years, and through evolution and “survival of the fittest” as it is often called we have arrived at the present world. However, we see that God created everything on this earth perfectly to his own glory.

We know God because he puts the desire in our hearts to know Him. He makes us desire to know Him and all parts of his plan that he reveals to us. By this we realize that there is only our one true God, no more gods or no less. We know God is in us as I John 4:13 says “…that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.” Romans 1:18-25 shows that everyone has a knowledge of God but many reject Him to follow other gods. A problem in this aspect with atheists is that when they say they do not believe in God is that they find other things to worship. They may not serve the one true God, but they will find false gods either as an idol or an idea like money, possessions, etc.

God is seen throughout the world’s history. He reveals himself in history or literally “His story”. We see a variation of good and bad things in history that display God’s guiding hand. In his plan he brought the Israelites out of Egypt and brought them into Canaan giving them the promise land. We take notice of the visions and prophets in the Old Testament and miracles in the New Testament. It would be impossible to explain all that happened without believing in God. Nothing can happen without a God who governs all. How astounding is God’s Sovereign plan!

God is revealed in His word, the Bible. II Timothy says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” Scripture is God-breathed and directly inspired by God. The whole book is the completely infallible recounting God’s works in history proving God again as the true God.  The book consists of 66 books written by 40 authors over a long period of time, and the unity of all the books gives us a complete revelation from God from Genesis to Revelation. Those who reject God reject the Bible’s clear revelation of God as the sovereign ruler from the beginning of time to the end of time.

Atheism is a willful denial of all that God has revealed to us. Atheists deny and reject many verses in the Bible that plainly state the existence of God. I Corinthians 8:6 says, “Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist…” God is the reason we have anything in the world, and by their beliefs atheists ignore the source of everything.
